Web Technologies : Network Hardware and Software

stijlnet.com utilises webspace on a number of servers located in various datacentres. Hardware comes from major manufacturers and vendors (including Dell, Intel and Cisco Systems) and represents an effective balance of specification, performance and price. Solid and reliable hosting provides a sound foundation on which a website may be built and its files served. Leased servers and distributed reseller accounts ensure that despite being a small company we can use and provide webspace on machines in various locations but still avoid the need for onsite maintenance and hardware technicians.

You can view more about our network hardware spec on the 'Hardware distribution' page. Our team have a sound understanding of server architecture and operations and we have hardware experience building and maintaining many different types of machine including sockets 5, 7, 370, A (462) and 478 based processors.

Our office machines run one of many different operating systems including Linux Ubuntu, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Apple's OS X. Our offsite servers mainly run on one or other flavour of Linux distribution.

Hosting accounts are each provisioned with a white label, Plesk or cPanel control panel and user interface / GUI. Options include a wide range of useful scripts plus fantastico installer.

We have an in-depth knowledge of the various domain registries and a comprehensive understanding of name registration, IP/TCP, nameservers and DNS including A, C and MX records.

Upload of standard website files to any of our standard hosting accounts takes place via FTP. Any email functionality is provisioned via POP / SMTP.

Our staff and users have experience using many different software packages and applications used in the course of website development, computer aided and graphic design, digital photography and image manipulation, video, audio, marketing, web and desktop publishing, business presentation, ad serving and tracking, mobile platforms, wireless internet access, site and traffic analysis and analytics, financial spreadsheets, database management, hardware benchmarking and monitoring, internet security and more.

Our web pages are mainly written in HTML or PHP and we integrate many open source and commercial scripts. Database driven sites are normally built using MySQL table stored data. Basic starter sites are mainly constructed using HTML and CSS. Validating HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and a basic Cascading Style Sheet (.css) file can be used to create simple but colourful and effective websites. More elaborate and dynamic sites may well use any of the following - PHP, Perl, AJAX, SOAP, CSS, MySQL, Javascript, XML and RSS. Examples would include browser scripting with Javascript or server scripting based on PHP with a MySQL database.

We are also happy to install and customise suitable 'out-of-the-box' solutions when it comes to building websites. We use both open source and commercially licensed scripts including vBulletin, phpBB, SMF, osCommerce, ClickCartPro, Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress and many others. We also recommend the blogger.com platform for those who would like some form of CMS but would rather do without the worries associated with patching scripts and updating their associated files.

Once a site is up and running, the advertising and marketing for it will often involve at least rudimentary SEO attention and a basic PPC campaign. Most of the research for both of these is non-automated but instead involves human input and decision making. For further details about marketing platforms and technologies please see our 'Marketing Channels' and 'Consulting' pages.
