Network Hardware Distribution

stijlnet.com utilises webspace on numerous physical servers, in different datacentres, located in various countries. We do not use one central set of nameservers but employ normally reliable networks to provide various levels of network redundancy should the need arise. Our standard hosting accounts (available to customers) are normally set up on a UK located server, running Linux OS and Apache. Network and managed sites may reside on a server located outside the EU plus we offer hosting setup and support for server space in US and Asia datacenters. Servers & Routers : We host and serve our websites and pages using hardware produced by some of the leading names in the technology industry. This includes servers from Dell and switches and routers from Cisco Systems.

Cabling : Internally, our upstream hosting networks use Cat5, 5e or 6 cabling for 100Mb / 1Gb connections and servers are located in secure multiple unit cabinets.

Power : Each cabinet (rack) usually has two independent power feeds. In the event of grid issues, momentary power failures can be covered by UPS battery backup systems and diesel generators can keep datacentres independently powered for an almost indefinite period of time.

Fire & Climate : Fire prevention and climate control are serious issues for any datacentre and each datacentre that we use has its own professional solutions. Climate is controlled by systems that continuously monitor air condition and keep the datacentre at a constant working temperature and humidity. Each datacentre also has a comprehensive range of fire suppression systems which will fill the sealed datacentre with inert gas to rapidly extinguish any fire without using water and without causing further damage to servers or other equipment.

Security : Secure fences and doors, key access, CCTV and locked cabinets are all standard features for any datacentre that takes its security seriously.

Typical Connection : Our dedicated server dev. hosting accounts (as of Jan '09) currently have the option to use a Carrier class UK data centre, Tier 1 network with 50,000 Mbit connectivity and fully managed Cisco Firewall.

Dedicated Hardware Options : Managed dedicated server options, for consultancy clients, include dual / quad core CPU, dual hard drives and RAID 1 disk mirroring. Please note that we do not directly supply dedicated servers located outside the UK.

Hardware Retirement : Servers are routinely retired and our distributed network allows for partial migration at any given time. The working lifetime of an individual server is normally assessed at 30-36 months. If the server on which your site is hosted is scheduled for retirement then you will have to make any necessary nameserver, DNS record, FTP and email account changes and upload your files again to your new hosting account. Under normal circumstances we would aim to give customers at least seven days advance notice of any planned migration that will affect them and also a simple explanation of the actions that they must take.
